Comment Confessions of an EPSO candidate (Part I.) | 01 Aug 2011

Having decided a year ago to make a commitment to getting a job in the European Commission, I realised I had some serious work to do if I was going to be ready for the EPSO Competitions this year.

I started researching everything I could about the various stages of the process, and what competitions I would be eligible to apply for. For 2010-11, my options were Administrator (AD5-7) in the field of European Public Administration and Assistant in the secretarial field (AST1), so I applied...

Comment Does anybody understand how the EU works? | 03 Feb 2011

The EU has been struggling with what they call 'lack of legitimacy' or 'democratic deficit'. This in plain English means that very few people actually know what EU institutions are doing in Brussels, and even fewer Europeans understand how these bodies work.

That is why we at Arboreus, without any EU or other public money or help, decided to create eight e-learning courses , many of them FREE, that explain, with dozens of examples, how each EU institution works, what they do, why they exist, which topics they deal with and ...

Comment The pen is dead - long live the keyboard? | 12 Nov 2010

Pen is dead EPSO assessment centreWhen was the last time you actually used a pen? We may be total geeks at Arboreus, but a few days ago when we had our executive meeting and looked for a pen, we realised that since we moved to our new office in the summer, we used a pen only once: to sign a contract with a bank some three months ago. Isn't that strange?!

The Maslow pyramid, or the hierarchy of needs, is a well known concept of the basic and higher-level needs of human beings. Did you know that the same exists for Internet users?

This week we have undergone one of the toughest days in the life of Online EU Tests (or rather our new brand, Online EU Training). Moving servers, upgrading to a new site, migrating data and fine-tuning a new system cuts into level 1 and 2 needs: internet was working for our users, but many times you could not connect, got interrupted or the system slowed down.

We at Arboreus are constantly experimenting. In the online world, customer feedback is an ambiguous thing: you don't see your customer's body language, tone of voice or behaviour but you can effectively measure browsing paths, email feedbacks and website analytics. The fundamental question is: how can we make your online experience better?

A challenge has come up recently in the form of usability improvements. We want to make the "flow" better so that users will need less clicks and clearer paths to find a menu, check out or download an e...

Are you a diplomat representing a South American country in Brussels? Are you a trade association covering renewable energy matters? Are you a lobbyist trying to have DG SANCO issue a positive opinion about a plant fertiliser? Are you an NGO going to great lengths to have the European Parliament condemn an act of racism in an African country? Well, the sad truth is that nobody cares about you.

To be fair, the truth is that everybody cares about you only as much as you offer them something they care about.

What does this mean? If you a...

Comment It's no joyride to be an EU Commissioner these... | 14 Sep 2010

Did you think EU Commissioners have an easy or safe job? Think again! Since the Lisbon Treaty entered into force, their life and moral safety is under threat: the Ukrainian orthodox Greek-Catholic Church has just issued a scathing statement...which, in our view, may even endanger Ukraine's (anyways uncertain) EU accession..!!
